On the Road

When I'm lucky enough to travel, I like to make it a priority to visit local museums and galleries. This August I was able to visit Reykjavik Iceland, and put the National Gallery of Iceland on the to-do list. Iceland is a land rich in volcanoes, ice, and water, and it was so interesting to see how Icelandic artists have used their environment to inform their art making. I could see how the geography of Iceland, consisting of vast glacial valleys and rocky mountains has shaped Icelandic artists' spacial sense and ideas about horizon. The color palette in Iceland offers a lot of dramatic contrast, lot's of black and white interspersed with vivid green and dots of bright colors from the wildflowers. When the sun shines, the vivid crystal clear blue skies are breathtaking.
