Plans Change

2020 has been a year of changes. Changes of plan writ large. The effects of this began to show themselves in my work after the first 8 or 9 weeks of shelter in place. I produced a series of 24”x24” intensely colored collage paintings. A few weeks later a series of stained canvas paintings emerged, the randomness of the spreading colors on the raw canvas somehow a metaphor for the many unexpected ways the pandemic had been affecting life. The long periods of time spent on my own, away from family, travel, and social groups began to lead towards a welcome release in my painting. For the first time in years I was painting from a place of personal reflection, not thinking of sales, commissions, or what anyone else would think. Getting un-linked from the rigors of keeping up appearances - hair color, manicures, pedicures, gym workouts and fashionable clothing also freed giant blocks of time. Things will of course will begin to revolve back to what we once thought of as normal in a few months. But altered.
