Writing and Painting

Somehow I’ve never been able to fully put aside my inclination to add writing to my paintings. Both reading and writing are dear to my heart, and learning to write as a small child is one of my first memories. Expressing myself through art is what fuels my life and writing is integral to that expression. This painting came about after reading some old letters I received when I was going through a difficult period during my early 20’s. I had made a lot of choices that hurt and confused the people I cared about, but as I was re-reading these letters recently I could feel the love and concern they had for me even then. I wonder how in the future we will be able to access these important parts of our pasts? Having these letters stored away in a box that has followed me from place to place for decades has allowed me to revisit some old sorrows and gain a feeling of peace and acceptance for who I was then.
